Dragon Capital is delighted to have organized the third annual Loseby lecture on the rule of law, delivered by Justice Susan Kenny of the Federal Court of Australia, in Saigon and Hanoi on 6 and 9 October, respectively. Justice Kenny spoke on “Why and how are independent and impartial courts crucial to investments/business in a country?”

Mr Frank Loseby (1883-1967), after whom the lecture series is named, was a British solicitor practising law in Hong Kong. In 1931, he acted for Ho Chi Minh and played a critical role in preventing his deportation from Hong Kong to what was then French Indochina, where he had been sentenced to death in absentia and would probably have been executed had he been deported.

To honour Mr. Loseby, Dragon Capital, together with the British Business Group Vietnam (BBGV), have initiated and sponsored a series of annual lectures on the Rule of Law. The lectures are for lawyers, judges, senior ministers, law students, and persons working in legal departments of the Vietnam Government (about 150 people from each Saigon and Hanoi).

The first lectures, held in October 2015, were delivered by Sir Nicholas Stadlen – QC and former high court judge in England. The second lectures in 2016 were delivered by Justice Michael Moore, a judge of the Court of Appeal of Tonga and a former Australian federal court judge.
